Laser pigmentation removal uses the 532 wavelength to precisely target pigment in the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. This wavelength falls within the green light spectrum, which is highly absorbed by melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour.
The laser energy causes the melanin particles to rapidly expand and shatter into much smaller fragments. Once fragmented, the pigment is naturally cleared by the body’s lymphatic system and immune response over time. This results in a gradual lightening of the treated area.
Because 532nm targets melanin so effectively, it is best suited for lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick I–III), as darker skin contains more background melanin, increasing the risk of unwanted side effects such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.
Immediately after treatment, the skin may appear slightly red and inflamed and the pigmented area often darkens temporarily before flaking off within 7–14 days. This is a normal part of the healing process and indicates that the pigment has been successfully targeted.
Overall, an Active Q-Switched 532nm laser treatment provides a precise, minimally invasive treatment for reducing unwanted pigmentation with minimal damage to surrounding skin.
